CAUTION - hang all foodbags using the pulley system (photo) where available. Otherwise hang your foodbag over a tree limb, 8 feet off of the ground and 4 feet from the tree trunk. DO NOT keep food in the shelter or in your tent, unless you enjoy big gnarly bear teeth, mice scampering over your head, and eau-de-skunk.

D2 Because of the many rocks and roots, the terrain difficulty in this area is elevated to 2 (moderate). Please pay attention where you are placing your feet at each step. If you twist an ankle, DO NOT remove your boots/shoes, DO keep hiking. Learn to walk on a twisted ankle, otherwise your ankle will swell up and you will require down time. In other words, SUCK IT UP! D1 "Shin splints" is a painful tearing of the shin muscles. These muscles can tear from the pounding inflicted during every step of your hike. Simple toe pointing (thirty seconds each foot, repeat) will stretch these muscles, generally eliminating shin splints. Another shin muscle stretching technique is to bend your leg back, grab your toes, pull up, and hold for thirty seconds each leg, repeat. A1

The diamond blazed BMT heads north from here, roughly paralleling the AT through the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.
The BB DRT follows the BMT for a while, then diverges, roughly paralleling the AT. The DRT ends at a junction with the AT near the summit of Blood Mountain.
GET WATER HERE - next water NB is 2.6 miles. If you have any concerns that you may poop out (photo) before getting to Hawk Mountain Shelter, get water here. If you have intentions of spending the night at Hickory Flatts, get water here.
NB AT ascends into forest.
SB AT descends old road. You will be hiking roughly parallel to Long Creek from here to Three Forks. You will be following an old road from here to Stover Creek Shelter. BMT shares the AT footpath for the next 0.9 miles.
If you wish to hike the old AT from here to Hickory Flatts, head north on the BMT/DRT a short distance, then stay straight when the BMT/DRT turn left. You will need to navigate over/around some blowdowns, but stay on the unmaintained path for about a mile until you attain the FS. Then turn right and keep looking right for the Hickory Flatts church facility.

CAUTION - AT formerly was along opposite side of church facility, and previous guidebooks asked you to turn east to get to facility. Make sure you turn west (left if NB, right if SB) to get to facility.
NB AT heads into forest across FS from open field.
SB AT skirts open field.
If you wish to hike the old AT from here to Long Creek Falls, heed the following instructions exactly. Stand in front of the pavilion, looking into the pavilion (click on photo link at left). Turn right and begin walking. When you reach the edge of the property, look for a descending footpath (probably overgrown). Follow this a short distance to where it ends at a perpendicular pathway. This is the old AT. Turn left. You will need to navigate over/around some blowdowns, but stay on this unmaintained path for about a mile until you reach the BMT/DRT, and then a little further to the AT and the Long Creek Falls BB.

A1 Hikers are welcome at Hickory Flatts, a remote church run facility with open-sided pavilion, ample space for tenting, 4-holer pit privy and unspooky cemetery. Non-hikers may also be present (church folk, hunters, teenagers in cars). Please leave area cleaner than when you arrived.  D1

Old road from private residence ends at this summit. On a very clear day, the skyline of Atlanta can be seen. On most any day, hawks and vultures can be seen frolicking in the thermals.
NB AT descends steeply with vista to right.
SB AT descends steeply with vista to left.

D2 In this area, the trail corridor narrows dramatically, with a steep dropoff east and private residences west. During the winter and early spring months, before full foliage, you will see the roof of a private residence to the west as you descend the mountain. Once Spring has sprung, this residence will no longer be visible. A2
